Dr. Charles W. Smith IV is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon licensed in Virginia and the District of Columbia. His approach to patient care centers on empathy and respect for the patient. He understands that the time of his patients is valuable but still takes all the time necessary to achieve each patient’s individual needs and expectations. Dr. Smith feels strongly that communication is the key to providing excellent patient care and believes his patients should have access to him during their recovery. Dr. Smith will even provide patients with his personal cell phone number so they have easy access to him. He will listen to the patient to ensure that their needs are being met and they are receiving the best treatment possible. He is also committed to collaboration with patients’ dental providers when determining the best course of treatment.
Dr. Smith is a Virginia native and is excited to be practicing and living in Winchester where his wife, Brittany, grew up. Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate studies at James Madison University where he not only met his wife but also obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with a minor in biology. He went on to attend Virginia’s only dental school, Virginia Commonwealth University and won many awards during his four years there. Following graduation, he was selected for a general practice residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital where he discovered his passion for oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Smith went on to complete an internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He then matched into the prestigious MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MedStar Georgetown University) in the nation’s capital where he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency.
Dr. Smith’s surgical expertise focuses on dental implant surgery and bone grafting, extractions, and wisdom teeth removal, and corrective jaw surgery known as orthognathic surgery. His extensive training in anesthesia allows him to provide patients with a more comfortable experience in his office while undergoing procedures without being admitted to a hospital.
Dr. Smith has a passion for teaching and is on staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where he maintains active clinical privileges. As an attending surgeon, he treats patients at the hospital and trains oral and maxillofacial surgery residents in the latest surgical techniques.
Dr. Smith feels fortunate to have trained at one of the top oral and maxillofacial surgery residencies in the country and to have served at many of the nation’s best hospitals including MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Children’s National Hospital, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Smith also takes pride in having cared for the country’s veterans at the VA Medical Center in D.C. Dr. Smith served as chief resident during his final year of residency. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Dental Association.
In his free time, Dr. Smith loves spending time with his wife, daughter, and son while residing in the Winchester area. He loves all outdoor activities and is excited to be back in the Shenandoah Valley with easier access to hiking, camping, boating, and skiing. Dr. Smith loves to give back to the community whenever possible. He has been fortunate to have the opportunity to volunteer with the Special Olympics and to provide care during many mission trips and free clinics during his training. He looks forward to finding more opportunities to volunteer around Winchester and within the community.
